Reading the passage

Mainstream historians glorified nations through accounts of their character, origins and destiny. The approach ties a nation's history to what it supposedly is by nature, making achievements or expansion seem expressions of its inherent character.

What we’re looking for

We want that kind of flattering interpretation of a subject's history. Merely describing a successful action or making any argument from evidence will not reproduce it.

Working the answers

  • A

The official recommends continuing a policy because it worked before. That is a practical argument for repeating an action, not an account presenting historical achievement as evidence of the subject's inherent character or destiny.

  • B
    Correct

The biographer interprets the novelist's unusually early achievements as proof of innate talent. Those achievements become manifestations of who she inherently is, much as the nationalist histories connect a nation's achievements and development to its special character and destiny.

  • C

This moves from a drug's intended purpose to a claim that it is the best treatment. It does not glorify a subject's historical development by presenting it as the expression of an inherent character.

  • D

Reporting a corporation's environmental hazards exposes harmful conduct. That critical purpose differs from the glorifying historical interpretation described here.

  • E

Repeated experimental results lead to a generalization about chemical behavior. There is no analogous construction of a flattering history around a nation-like subject's innate qualities or destiny.
