Passage A Research concerning happiness and wealth reveals(487 more words not shown)

Passage A(297 more words not shown)

Passage B(198 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(21 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

In A, the study arrives after the explanation has already introduced habituation and rivalry. People choosing a better relative position despite lower income provide evidence for the rivalry account.

What we’re looking for

B opens with the study and asks how to interpret it. That launches the discussion of biological rivalry versus success in creating value. The same study can support an argument in one account and introduce the issue to be examined in another.

Working the answers

  • A

A does not argue against the study's rivalry interpretation. It uses the result to support it. The first half therefore fails before we even consider B's role.

  • B

Again, A is not presenting a view it will reject. Its statement that people were happy to be poorer when their relative position improved treats the finding as supporting evidence.

  • C

The first half fits A. The second does not fit B: B does not introduce the rivalry view in order to add evidence for it. It raises that interpretation and then argues that the evidence better supports success and value creation.

  • D
    Correct

A uses the result as evidence that relative position matters. B uses it in its opening question to introduce the central issue: what explains this preference? Both descriptions fit without assuming the authors interpret the evidence identically.

  • E

A has already introduced its main topic and mechanisms before the study appears. The study develops that explanation rather than introducing the topic. B's later challenge cannot rescue the incorrect first half.
