Reading the passage
Match the whole sequence. Dunham combined expertise in dance and social research, studied another culture's practices through participation, then used what she learned in her own choreography. We need more than a person who knows two subjects or writes a report.
What we’re looking for
In particular, the researcher and the person who carries the techniques into practice should not become two unrelated people. Dunham did both jobs.
Working the answers
- A
The archaeologist's two areas of expertise fit the beginning, but a separate engineer applies her findings. That splits Dunham's research and creative application between two people and loses her own adaptation of what she learned.
- B
Other researchers collect the plants, and a company develops the medicines. The individual neither participates in the original practices being studied nor personally carries the techniques into her own field in the way Dunham does.
- C
Surgery and drawing provide two skills, but the product is an illustrated manual of surgical techniques. This doesn't match studying practices in another culture and introducing selected techniques into performance at home. Collaboration itself isn't disqualifying; the missing research-to-application sequence is.
- DCorrect
Teaching plus social psychology matches the dual preparation. Working with teachers abroad matches learning through involvement, and introducing their effective procedures at home matches bringing Caribbean techniques into North American choreography. The same person connects the study to the application.
- E
The designer studies several cultures and presents findings in a book. We aren't given the distinct research training or, more importantly, the adaptation of those practices into his own design work. Reporting results doesn't match Dunham's research-to-performance contribution.
