Reading the passage
The paragraph gives two obstacles to studying dance. First, the field lacked scientific prestige. Second, the necessary skills were split between groups: social scientists didn't understand dance techniques, and dance experts weren't trained in social research.
What we’re looking for
Mentioning the dance experts completes that second obstacle. Having dance expertise alone didn't solve the research problem; Dunham's combination of skills was unusual.
Working the answers
- A
The specific reference explains why dance experts could not fill the research gap. It doesn't explain why social scientists declined to embrace dance as a subject. Their preference for more prestigious subjects and their own lack of dance training are separate points.
- B
Neither group is presented as adequately equipped, let alone ranked as more qualified overall. One lacks dance knowledge; the other lacks research training. The point is the complementary deficits.
- C
This would make the sentence an additional explanation of why Dunham chose this work. Instead, it explains why the field had previously been neglected. A condition that helps make her contribution possible isn't automatically a stated personal motivation.
- DCorrect
Without researchers who combined the two kinds of expertise, the study of dance remained undeveloped. The reference to dance experts supplies one side of that explanation and prepares us to understand the significance of Dunham's dual training.
- E
Missing skills don't establish tension between the groups. We aren't told that dancers and social scientists were in conflict with one another.
