Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main point: the CJD research uncovered a new kind of pathogen that reproduces without genetic material. We want some version of that whole discovery, not just a sentence about proteins or the disease's symptoms.
What we’re looking for
The connection matters. Prions are proteins, but their significance here is that they cause disease while lacking something previously thought essential for infectious agents.
Working the answers
- A
This makes the focus ordinary protein production and an unresolved mechanism. The missing scientific detail is a qualification at the end, not the central discovery the discussion develops.
- BCorrect
“Protein pathogens” refers to prions, and reproducing without genetic material is their surprising feature. B also ties the discovery to the investigation of CJD. The wording differs from our prediction while preserving the same idea.
- C
Possible involvement in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's is a closing extension, not the main point. “Most other” neurological conditions also exceeds the two examples and the cautious possibility actually given.
- D
The initial skepticism is background about the discovery's reception. Later research supports the theory, and the main discussion explains what scientists found, not just why others doubted it.
- E
This captures the unusual reproduction but leaves out the central significance: these proteins are disease-causing agents. B gives the more complete account of the discovery and its connection to CJD.
