Reading the passage
The royal boat is made with broomsticks, and the water is drapery. These are ordinary materials pretending to be something grand. The writer uses them to make the amateur side of the picture visible, then explains why the finished scene is nevertheless magical.
What we’re looking for
Keep that local job separate from the judgment of the whole photograph. A makeshift prop can be amateurish without making the work bad.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
The recognizable broomsticks and cloth illustrate the amateur construction. They give us the first half of the stated combination of amateurism and artistry; the resulting magical scene supplies the other half.
- B
This is a photograph, not an example of theater transforming an audience's perception during a performance. The later comparison to good amateur theatricals helps characterize its appeal, but it doesn't change what the props are doing in the explanation.
- C
Repurposing objects might strike us as clever, but the author introduces them as obviously makeshift features and then sets those details aside. The emphasis is that artistry survives their visible ordinariness, not that the substitutions demonstrate exceptional inventiveness.
- D
An obvious substitute isn't necessarily ironic. We aren't told that Cameron used these materials to mock the scene or deliberately create an ironic distance from it. Their visible amateur quality is enough to explain the reference.
- E
The judgment is positive: the scene is magical and mysterious. Pointing out broomsticks isn't a reason to condemn the picture; it helps explain the unusual combination the author admires.
