Reading the passage
Our two main points will help: A explains why the weed needs control, and B challenges the motives behind that kind of campaign. There are several ways to describe that relationship, so I don't have one exact sentence to predict. We'll test each description against what the writers actually do.
Working the answers
- A
The writers assess the problem differently, but A's evidence doesn't directly refute B's claims. Local productivity reductions can coexist with B's claim that the highlighted mammals aren't threatened throughout North America. A also doesn't present evidence answering the charge about human motives.
- B
B doesn't take A's case for control as an accepted premise. It questions the ecological justification and offers a different explanation for the campaign.
- CCorrect
B describes the campaign's environmental justification before criticizing it. A makes that sort of environmental argument without addressing B's concerns about ideology, control, or money. The awareness runs one way. That fits even though it wasn't an exact sentence we predicted.
- D
B criticizes the campaign but doesn't advocate a specific policy that A rejects. Doubting the motives isn't itself an explicit proposal to let the weed spread unchecked.
- E
This reverses the direction. B downplays the ecological concerns emphasized in A. A doesn't address and minimize B's claims about human motives.
