Reading the passage

We've already predicted that Kingston's writing grows out of Chinese talk-story, a connection some critics missed because they looked only at written predecessors. We're looking for some version of that relationship. A detail about how she remembers or writes stories can support it without being the whole point.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

This captures both the connection and the misunderstanding: Kingston has significant predecessors, but we find them in an oral tradition rather than only in earlier written works.

  • B

This picks up her view of writers as performers and of stories developing after publication. That helps explain her relationship to talk-story, but it narrows the whole discussion to one part of the third paragraph.

  • C

We discuss Kingston, not Chinese American writers in general or critics of ethnic literatures throughout the United States. C turns this particular correction into a broader conclusion we haven't established.

  • D

Her techniques are evidence of her connection to talk-story. D concentrates on those techniques, especially Chinese speech in English writing, without capturing the larger point about the literary ancestry the critics overlooked.

  • E

We learn that talk-story is old and that Kingston draws on it. We don't learn that her books caused a revival of interest in it.
