Reading the passage
My first thought is the contrast in their reasons for taking action: A emphasizes ecological harm, while B questions whether the campaign really serves nature. But a disagreement answer needs a position from each writer. We should be ready to narrow that initial prediction if an answer asks about people or claims A never discusses.
Working the answers
- A
A says disturbed habitats accelerate the weed's spread. B doesn't address that comparison, so we lack a contrary view.
- BCorrect
A treats observed “serious reductions” in aquatic furbearer productivity as part of the ecological problem. B downplays concern for these animals because the highlighted species aren't threatened in North America, then shifts to threatened revenues. That supports a disagreement over how serious the local threat is. B needn't deny every local decline for the writers to assess its seriousness differently.
- C
This resembles our initial prediction, but goes beyond A's position. A gives ecological reasons for concern; it doesn't assess whether most other advocates are sincere. A could support control while distrusting some fellow advocates. We can't manufacture its denial of this claim.
- D
A gives a biomass figure without comparing it with what people generally believe. B doesn't make that comparison either.
- E
Neither proposes a policy for other non-native plants. Their views about purple loosestrife don't settle that broader question.
