Which one of the following(10 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

The first paragraph tells us how the current approach works. The second tells us what's wrong with it: vague guidance and a focus on appearances that can miss actual bias. Predict criticism of the approach just described. The concrete replacement—written explanations—comes in the third paragraph.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

This identifies the second paragraph's job in relation to the first. It objects to the existing approach and explains the problems the author sees with it.

  • B

The second paragraph doesn't present the written-explanation solution. The third paragraph introduces that proposal and endorses it; it does not reject a solution supplied earlier. Both parts of B misdescribe the sequence.

  • C

The paragraph makes general criticisms. It gives no particular judge, case or other concrete example showing those problems in action.

  • D

There is no history of how the present approach developed. Describing a current weakness is different from tracing its origins.

  • E

The criticism is certainly important to the overall argument, but this description is less accurate than A. The rest of the discussion develops a replacement and answers an objection to that replacement. The second paragraph's immediate purpose is to object to the approach already described, not simply announce a thesis that the remaining paragraphs then defend.
