Reading the passage
What matters about the Kayapo's filming? They borrow a tool from outside their culture while keeping their own cultural identity. Even the camerawork and editing reflect the aesthetic principles of their ceremonies.
What we’re looking for
An analogy should preserve that relationship: adopting something from elsewhere without abandoning one's own tradition. A literal camera is unnecessary. We should be open to a different kind of borrowing if the relationship is the same.
Working the answers
- A
These immigrants bring their own culinary traditions into a new place and change that place's practices. We need people adopting an outside contribution while retaining their own tradition. A describes the influence they export, not how they incorporate someone else's.
- BCorrect
The Latin American composers match the Kayapo, and the borrowed jazz instrumentation and harmonies match the borrowed video technology. Crucially, the composers remain faithful to their own musical traditions, just as the Kayapo's videos retain their own aesthetic principles. The borrowed element is musical rather than technological, but the important relationship matches.
- C
The Internet is a technology, which makes this tempting at a surface level. But these writers predict that it will fundamentally reshape fiction. The answer does not describe incorporating an outside influence while preserving a distinctive existing tradition.
- D
Reviving older fashions is looking back to an earlier style. We aren't told that designers adopt something from another culture while maintaining their own. A return to an old practice is not the same relationship as borrowing a new tool.
- E
These artists reject their existing representational traditions. That goes against the feature we need: the Kayapo maintain their cultural principles as they use the outside technology. Merely finding a source of artistic inspiration is not enough.
