Ginsburg rejects Weiner's central claim: using Western video technology does not inevitably make its users Western. She goes further and says it can strengthen the languages and traditions he fears it will destroy. Predict a clear rejection, not neutrality or a small reservation.

What we’re looking for

Her concession that Western objects are not neutral doesn't soften that central disagreement into agreement. Technology can influence a culture without determining its identity in the way Weiner claims.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

Fundamental rejection fits the disagreement about the basic effect of video. Weiner predicts loss of identity; Ginsburg maintains that people can retain their conventions and use video to strengthen their traditions.

  • B

Censure expresses disapproval, but reluctant adds hesitation or unwillingness to criticize. Nothing shows that Ginsburg holds back. She directly attacks the claim that a camera makes its user Western.

  • C

Mild understates the disagreement. She is not correcting a minor detail of Weiner's account; she rejects the idea that adopting the technology necessarily produces the cultural result he predicts.

  • D

She takes a side. Calling the position technological determinism and arguing for video's benefits is not diplomatic neutrality.

  • E

She does not support Weiner's position. Recognizing that Western objects can have cultural effects is not an endorsement of his claim that video destroys the identity its users seek to preserve.
