Reading the passage
Locate both references before comparing the word right. In A, bullies forfeit the right not to be interfered with, and liars forfeit the right to honest treatment. These are claims about how other people should treat them.
What we’re looking for
In B, the Kantian argument leads to a right to respond in kind. Now we are looking at what the responder is allowed to do. The contrast is receiving certain treatment versus being licensed to act.
Working the answers
- A
Both discussions concern moral rights. A does not establish a legal entitlement, and neither reference depends on a statute or legal ruling.
- B
Nothing distinguishes society's grant of a benefit from an authority figure's grant. B derives permission from the other person's rational conduct, not from a decision by an individual in authority.
- C
The references do not contrast group entitlements with individual ones. A discusses what a bully or liar can claim, and B discusses what another person may do in response.
- D
A expressly says the right can be forfeited. Calling it something that cannot be given up reverses the very point of the sentence we were sent to examine.
- ECorrect
A's right concerns behavior one is entitled to receive: others' noninterference or honesty. B's right concerns behavior one is permitted to perform: treating someone as that person treated others. The answer states precisely the receiving-versus-acting distinction we identified.
