Reading the passage
Turner studies the Kayapo and finds that they make video reflect their own culture. Their camerawork and editing follow the principles of their ceremonies. That gives us more than a generally negative attitude toward Weiner: it identifies what his prediction misses.
What we’re looking for
Weiner expects the outside technology to impose a Western outlook. Turner has evidence that its users can adapt it to their own values. Predict criticism of that assumption about the technology's impact.
Working the answers
- A
Turner discusses one society's use of video. He does not compare the world's many indigenous traditions or accuse Weiner of failing to recognize their diversity. Diversity may be real without being this researcher's stated objection.
- B
The disagreement is about what happens when people use video, not how widely equipment has become available. Turner doesn't challenge the extent of its spread.
- C
Weiner's concern about cultural loss already reflects a concern for preservation. Turner challenges his understanding of whether cameras undermine that preservation, not whether traditional practices are worth preserving.
- DCorrect
The Kayapo adapt the outside technology to their own aesthetic principles. That is exactly the capacity Weiner's prediction underestimates: indigenous people can shape how they use a product from another culture instead of simply acquiring that culture's outlook along with it.
- E
Earlier Western technologies are not the basis of Turner's criticism. The wider history mentioned by Ginsburg does not establish that Weiner ignores it, and Turner supplies evidence about the Kayapo's present use of video. This answer replaces that evidence with a different objection.
