Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main point: great perfume is art and deserves to be taken seriously. The comparisons with painting and music explain why. Corporate cost cutting is offered afterward as one possible reason perfume has been undervalued.
What we’re looking for
The answer should give us that central judgment, rather than promote either the supporting analogy or the possible explanation into the whole point.
Working the answers
- A
The final paragraph criticizes corporations for replacing better ingredients with cheaper substitutes to increase profits. It does not defend their appreciation of artistic skill. This also leaves out the call to take great perfume seriously.
- B
The author does say a perfumer can create an experience as powerful as a painter's or composer's. But that supports the broader claim that perfume deserves recognition as art. The comparison of reactions is a reason for the conclusion, not the complete conclusion.
- C
The final paragraph offers a possible explanation for why great perfume is undervalued. It does not establish that corporate control is the reason so few great perfumes are produced. C changes the problem and makes the explanation more definite.
- DCorrect
This states the prediction directly: great perfumes are works of art and deserve respect and attention on that basis. It covers the opening complaint and the purpose of the comparisons that follow.
- E
Skilled combination of ingredients is part of the analogy with painting. The author's broader concern is the recognition perfume deserves, not merely classifying these two crafts as related.
