Reading the passage
The author objects to replacing better ingredients with cheap approximations simply to increase profits. So look for a change that respects the perfume's artistic quality, rather than merely making it cheaper or easier to sell.
What we’re looking for
That principle gives us a direction without requiring us to predict a particular ingredient. Natural ingredients aren't automatically the answer: the author says skilled perfumers use natural and synthetic compounds.
Working the answers
- A
Joy Parfum is an example of a masterpiece, not a formula every other perfume should imitate. Making another classic smell more like it would not necessarily respect that perfume's own artistic character.
- B
An ingredient's high cost is precisely the kind of reason the corporations use for substitutions the author criticizes. Cost alone does not supply the artistic justification we're looking for.
- C
The distinction is quality, not natural versus synthetic. The second paragraph expressly includes both kinds of ingredients in the perfumer's craft. This substitution doesn't tell us whether the resulting perfume would be better.
- D
Wider popularity is a commercial benefit. Nothing here establishes that attracting more customers preserves or improves the work's artistic quality.
- ECorrect
This restores a previously altered perfume toward its creator's original formula. That fits the author's concern that companies have tampered with artistic work for profit: undoing those changes would recover something of the original creation. It supplies a reason connected to the art itself, rather than just cost or sales.
