Reading the passage

Separate an unanswered question from a definite warning about evidence. The reviewer clearly says we cannot assume that a demographic change necessarily increased activism. What remains unclear is how far the leaders' outlook extended to the wider population.

What we’re looking for

The warning does not prove that the activists were unrepresentative. It means their representativeness has not been adequately established.

Working the answers

  • A

The author answers whether that assumption is warranted: “one cannot assume” the stated connection without a better understanding of other variables. That is a definite judgment about the evidence, not an expression of uncertainty about whether we may simply assume it.

  • B

The opening credits García with persuasive evidence that earlier historians failed to recognize important features of the activism. The reviewer is not undecided about whether García has corrected something in their picture.

  • C

The reviewer explicitly contrasts consensus with “intense and lively debate.” General agreement is not left as an open question here.

  • D
    Correct

The third paragraph says García “may be exaggerating” representativeness, then states that it is not clear how far the outlook extended beyond the activists. That directly identifies the unknown: how widely the views were shared.

  • E

The second paragraph describes these organizations as often diametrically opposed and explains their differing approaches. Their political relationship is supplied, rather than left uncertain.
