Reading the passage
Follow the work each paragraph does. First, we have damaged farmland that needs restoring, along with reasons the obvious alternatives are impractical or slow. Next, researchers test planting native species. Finally, they add beneficial soil organisms, explain the results, and recommend combining the two measures.
What we’re looking for
That gives us a clear outline: problem, study addressing it, then a course of action based on what the study found.
Working the answers
- A
The study doesn't come first; the opening establishes the problem it addresses. Also, calling the findings inconclusive misses their role in supporting the final recommendation. Preliminary results can support a proposal without settling every question.
- B
We aren't given a hypothesis followed by evidence on both sides and a revised hypothesis. The results develop a restoration approach; they aren't organized as an argument undermining and modifying an opening hypothesis.
- C
This starts with an evaluation of the study, skipping the opening problem. It also puts the suggested plan before the conclusions about its effectiveness. Here the results and explanation lead to the combined recommendation at the end.
- D
The objective remains restoring natural diversity. The study doesn't argue for changing that goal and then offer a method for achieving a revised one.
- ECorrect
The opening presents the restoration problem. The Netherlands experiment addresses it, and the ending proposes sowing beneficial organisms along with native seeds. Each part of the outline has a clear place.
