Reading the passage
Getting Home Alive is the strongest example in a series of experiments. We first see mixed genres, then a departure from chronology, and then a mother and daughter weaving their voices together. The phrase “departs even further” tells us how this example advances the discussion. So predict a demonstration of how far the writers' experiments go. The mother-daughter structure supports the larger point about changing autobiography; it isn't just an interesting fact about who wrote the book.
Working the answers
- A
There are differences among the examples, but the author isn't primarily sorting experimental autobiographies into three categories. The sequence shows increasingly extensive departures from convention. A description of what differs misses why the final example is introduced.
- B
The discussion emphasizes the two authors' interwoven narratives and poems. It doesn't explain a journal-entry-and-poem combination, and that combination wouldn't capture the multiple-voice experiment.
- C
One jointly authored collection doesn't establish that multiple voices are common throughout Latina autobiography. The example shows that this experiment occurs, not how widespread it is.
- D
Possible reader confusion is acknowledged, but the author immediately explains the deliberate design. The purpose isn't to diagnose readers' difficulty; it's to show what the writers are doing with structure.
- ECorrect
Having two authors whose pieces interact extends the experimentation beyond the earlier examples. It illustrates the extent of their changes to form and structure, exactly the role we predicted.
