Reading the passage
The Netherlands method adds native seeds and beneficial microorganisms to damaged soil. Why research that approach instead of just replacing the soil? The opening says replacement is quickest, but impractical across hundreds of thousands of acres.
What we’re looking for
Least advantageous asks when the researched method would have less of an advantage. If a particular field's topsoil could easily be replaced, the obstacle to the quicker alternative would disappear. We wouldn't have the same reason to rely on gradually rebuilding the existing soil.
Working the answers
- A
Depleted nutrients are part of the restoration problem. This doesn't identify an easier alternative or show that restoring native plants and beneficial organisms would be unnecessary. The study's method needn't directly fix every problem to remain useful.
- BCorrect
Easy removal and replacement makes the quicker method practical for this field. That reduces the advantage of using the Netherlands approach. We aren't saying the researched method would fail; we're comparing it with an available alternative.
- C
Heavy fertilization is a reason the field needs restoration. It doesn't remove the problem the researchers are trying to address.
- D
The objective is a natural ecological state, not commercial grass production. Potential to grow a marketable crop doesn't tell us that the restoration method would be less useful.
- E
Corn growing next door doesn't establish anything about this field's native seeds, beneficial organisms, or ease of topsoil replacement. That fact supplies no comparable reason to prefer another method.
