Reading the passage

We've already predicted the explanation: maize produces so much because its C-4 process keeps oxygen from interfering with rubisco and sugar production. Look for that connection between the mechanism and productivity, even if the answer describes it differently.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

This states the greater productivity and explains it through protection from excess oxygen. That's the central connection we predicted.

  • B

Cultural influence sets up the question of why maize is so productive. This answer stops at that influence instead of supplying the main biochemical explanation. It also adds higher-quality nutrients; producing more food doesn't establish that the food is more nutritious.

  • C

The advantage isn't more efficient use of atmospheric hydrogen. The account obtains hydrogen from water and explains how C-4 protects sugar production from oxygen. C substitutes a different mechanism for the one we're explaining.

  • D

Rubisco's presence isn't the special protection. Rubisco participates in the general process described in paragraph two and is vulnerable to oxygen. Separating it from oxygen explains the C-4 advantage.

  • E

This sounds close until “entering the plants' leaves.” The gases are kept out of particular cells inside the leaf, not the whole leaf. That change makes the proposed explanation inaccurate; merely describing protection isn't enough if we put the barrier in the wrong place.
