Reading the passage

Fragmentary doesn't mean useless. The writer says we can piece together a picture and then does so, drawing conclusions about women's practice and how it was regarded. I would describe the attitude as trusting the sources enough to learn from them, while recognizing that they don't tell us everything.

Working the answers

  • A

The limited evidence prompts an investigation, not a warning that the documents are likely to be misread. That wary attitude isn't expressed.

  • B

This looks forward to a more complete analysis answering lingering questions. The discussion presents conclusions already drawn; it doesn't identify those unanswered questions or call for that future analysis.

  • C

No dispute about the documents' authenticity is described. We aren't waiting for historians to accept them as genuine.

  • D
    Correct

The writer repeatedly uses these fragments as evidence for factual conclusions. That demonstrates confidence that they are reliable enough for those inferences, without requiring a complete historical record.

  • E

No new research method is introduced or tested. These sources support conclusions about women doctors; they aren't presented as trial cases for a methodology.
