Reading the passage
Be careful with the direction: we want the statement the writer would be least likely to accept. The Cultural Revolution restricted what artists could show, yet later movements reacted against those restrictions. We should reject a claim that goes beyond or misrepresents that account, rather than choose a supported description of the restrictions.
Working the answers
- A
This is the irony the second paragraph states: restrictions helped provoke movements opposed to their policies. The writer would agree, so it isn't our answer.
- B
The writer contrasts the “monotony of Revolutionary Realism” with the later flourishing of many movements. That supports the comparison in variety and interest.
- C
The first paragraph says the permitted reality was reshaped and misrepresented to serve political beliefs. C matches that criticism of an idealized political picture.
- DCorrect
One historical chain of reactions doesn't establish that restrictive policies generally promote more artistic growth than liberal ones. We aren't given that broader comparison or told what would have happened under freer policies. An unintended creative reaction isn't an endorsement of repression as the better policy.
- E
Lasting repercussions are announced in the opening and developed through the later movements. This is something the writer would accept.
