Reading the passage

What does the mediator actually do? The mediator helps two disputing sides communicate and reach their own agreement. The mediator doesn't impose the outcome.

What we’re looking for

So I want a third party helping others negotiate. Someone who merely records a meeting, collects opinions, or announces a decision won't fill that role.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

The labor relations specialist matches the mediator, while the workers and management match the two sides of the dispute. The specialist helps them reach an agreeable salary arrangement. A salary increase doesn't mean the specialist is taking the workers' side; both workers and management are being assisted in reaching an agreement.

  • B

The production is selected through a majority vote. The teacher isn't helping opposing parties negotiate an agreement with each other.

  • C

Gathering staff feedback before implementing a system isn't the same as helping disputing sides reach a negotiated solution.

  • D

Recording minutes preserves what happened at a meeting. It doesn't supply the mediator's role in helping the parties resolve their disagreement.

  • E

The timing and decision maker are wrong. The judge has already rendered a decision before meeting with counsel. A mediator helps the parties reach the decision themselves; a private meeting after a judge decides doesn't match.
