Reading the passage
What do we know about the ministers? They had worked on their communities' concerns for years, had political connections, and then took a risk by leading this protest. Several facts might support an answer, so I don't have one exact prediction. I'll check what each choice claims about them.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
Their tactics became more aggressive, but they were still trying to address their communities' concerns. The second paragraph describes their earlier work on “social, political, and economic concerns”; seeking access to construction jobs fits those broader goals. A change in approach doesn't by itself mean a change in what they wanted for their communities.
- B
Their dual role served as a model for future ministers. We aren't told that these same leaders went on to organize more campaigns.
- C
We don't learn when this group first came together to address construction-industry problems. Their earlier community work doesn't establish this particular collaboration before CORE's involvement.
- D
Some civil rights activists considered the agreement incomplete. That gives us criticism of the result, but it doesn't identify CORE and other organizations as critics of the ministers. The choice adds both specific critics and a more specific target of criticism.
- E
This is tempting because the protest was a change. But the change was from a moderate approach to aggressive protest, not necessarily from no civil rights involvement to involvement. Their earlier work through political and community channels could already have addressed civil rights. Moderation doesn't establish the absence of such work.
