Reading the passage

Use the definition, not just the general idea of recycling. Designed offal involves planning manufacturing waste so that it can feed directly back into that process or a related one. Our metal-shavings example fits: scraps left from making one item become material for making another.

Working the answers

  • A

The newspaper is a discarded consumer product being used as raw material. We don't see waste from a manufacturing process being designed for reuse. Buying it isn't itself the problem; the missing connection to manufacturing waste is.

  • B

The fixtures are recovered from old buildings. They aren't leftover material from producing something.

  • C

Again, these are discarded finished products: automobiles. Melting their metal is recycling, but it doesn't illustrate the more specific definition.

  • D
    Correct

Making the body panels leaves plastic behind, and that plastic goes into another part of automobile production: door insulation. We have both the manufacturing waste and its reuse in a related process.

  • E

Beverage containers are recycled after use. Like the newspapers and automobiles, they don't supply the manufacturing-scrap relationship we're looking for.
