Reading the passage

The sentence contrasts private evidence about how an experience feels with externally observable evidence, such as nerve impulses. That's its job: show how the scientific approach differs from the traditional one.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

“Private evidence” belongs to the traditional approach; data that are “externally observable” belong to the method the objectivists favor. The sentence puts that difference in concrete terms before we hear the subjectivists' reply.

  • B

Pain is an example of subjective experience, but the sentence doesn't argue that pain must be described from no particular point of view. It reports how the scientific approach works.

  • C

It describes what scientists do, as the objectivists characterize it. It doesn't establish why scientists should avoid describing inner experience.

  • D

The writer isn't criticizing subjectivists here. Explaining the approach they oppose isn't itself an argument that they're wrong.

  • E

The next sentence mentions science's success in other fields. The sentence we're asked about identifies the kind of evidence scientists use; it doesn't explain why chemistry, biology, and physics have succeeded.
