Reading the passage

What do these artists have in common? They want to rediscover Mexican national identity, yet they develop different styles. I'd initially look for something consistent with that cultural interest. We'll need evidence for the particular claim, rather than assume every artist holds every possible view about art.

Working the answers

  • A

Their interest in style doesn't mean content should be disregarded. Representing Mexican culture is a shared aim. We aren't given this preference for form over content.

  • B

Government support helped this movement. That doesn't establish that the artists regard it as essential for art to flourish.

  • C

The muralists “often used a realist style.” Their actual work gives us no reason to think they would declare realism unsuitable for large public paintings.

  • D
    Correct

Rivera incorporates Italian Renaissance techniques while participating in the rediscovery of Mexican identity. That combination supports the modest claim that borrowing from another culture can contribute to the project. We don't need a separate foreign influence named for every artist: D says it can help, not that all muralists must borrow the same techniques.

  • E

The comparison with easel painting concerns scale, brushstrokes, and viewing positions. It doesn't call easel painting elitist.
