Reading the passage

We've already predicted a discussion of Haraway's ambitious, unconventional proposal. We learn what she thinks about nature and knowledge, then how her writing and use of cultural material reflect that view. We need both the ideas and their presentation.

Working the answers

  • A

Gender and class are among the book's concerns. But this isn't a general account of their roles throughout Western science. Those topics help introduce one particular proposal.

  • B

Traditional history appears as a contrast, so more than one method is mentioned. The focus, though, is Haraway's proposal, including her view of scientific knowledge as well as her way of writing history. A comparison of two writing methods doesn't capture that full focus.

  • C
    Correct

She challenges the “traditional disjunction” between scientist and nature and proposes different contributors to knowledge. Her fragmented writing reflects those ideas. Content and style covers those connected parts of the proposed reform.

  • D

A history of science written from a feminist perspective isn't a history of women in science. This changes the subject of the book. A perspective used to examine a subject and the subject itself aren't interchangeable.

  • E

Paragraph 3 does connect a theoretical view with a writing style. But that is only part of the discussion, which also explains Haraway's substantive proposal and use of cultural issues. E turns that one connection into the whole subject.
