Reading the passage
The claim is that muralism was more than a result of the Revolution's political and social changes; artistic innovations mattered too. My initial thought is to look for more evidence of artistic innovation.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
Important, deliberately nonpolitical works in the same style would make it harder to reduce muralism to revolutionary politics. This supports the first half of the claim, even though it doesn't give us the new artistic technique I initially expected.
- B
Some painters' lack of familiarity with outside innovations doesn't provide positive evidence for the additional artistic influences the writer describes.
- C
Knowing that changes revived older movements doesn't show how those changes influenced these muralists or why politics alone is insufficient. We need that connection, not just the origins of developments elsewhere in art.
- D
The officials' awareness isn't the relevant link. The artists formulated the movement's theoretical foundation; officials could know little about artistic innovations while the artists used them.
- E
Restricting public display to nationalist works doesn't help show that muralism went beyond its political dimension. Nor does the restriction tell us whether the permitted works had innovative styles.
