Reading the passage

Our main-point prediction connected psychology with government decisions. The organization follows that connection: first explain findings about risk and perceived losses, then apply them to international conflict. I want an answer that captures both parts.

Working the answers

  • A

Psychological motives in conflict are part of the discussion, so this is close. But it leaves out the substantial explanation of individuals' gambling choices before those findings are applied to governments. D describes the whole movement more accurately.

  • B

Britain and Argentina illustrate why the findings matter to international affairs. The conflict isn't presented as a test used to determine whether a proposed psychological hypothesis holds up. We get research findings followed by their application.

  • C

The direction is backward. Psychology is being applied to international affairs; political scientists' findings aren't being offered for psychologists to incorporate.

  • D
    Correct

The new considerations concern how perceived losses affect willingness to take risks. The other field is the study of international conflict. This captures the psychological explanation and the use made of it in the final paragraph.

  • E

The older and newer views develop one psychological explanation that is then applied to international affairs. They aren't presented as two separate approaches to understanding international crises.
