Reading the passage

The writer defends Ellison's blend of cultural traditions and uses jazz to help explain it. This is a broad question about the writer's views, so I wouldn't try to predict one exact claim. We need support from that argument, not merely something that could be true about Ellison or his novel.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

Jazz musicians transform European-influenced theater songs into pieces that are individually distinctive while conveying African American cultural experience (paragraph 3). That's a successful blend: outside influences don't prevent the resulting work from being distinctive and culturally expressive. It supplies the model for understanding Ellison.

  • B

The critics wanted more political action. The writer defends cultural blending as an artistic choice, but doesn't claim it's an effective tool for producing political or social change. This gives the blend an effect we haven't established.

  • C

Nothing says Invisible Man caused renewed interest in jazz. Jazz helps us interpret the novel; the novel isn't credited with changing jazz's popularity.

  • D

The protagonist is discussed, but not to illustrate the difficulty of combining these concerns. The later paragraphs explain how individual expression and cultural connection can coexist. D misses the point of that treatment.

  • E

No claim says Ellison's technique is too obscure or complex to attract a large audience. We aren't given an assessment of its effect on audience size.
