Reading the passage
We've already predicted that computer conferences have some features of community but fall short of being a full replacement. The respect and support are real; the writer still objects to treating these groups as equivalent to neighborhoods. I'm looking for that qualified criticism.
Working the answers
- A
This emphasizes the advocates' case for effective substitution. The writer accepts some of the benefits, then explains why conferences still fall short. A leaves out that central objection.
- B
We aren't told that people are returning to traditional interactions. The ending worries that they might cut themselves off further from their neighbors, not that they are already reversing that trend.
- C
The writer grants that conferences can be respectful and supportive. Geographic separation and typing aren't presented as preventing those benefits; the objection is that those benefits aren't enough.
- DCorrect
My initial prediction didn't give diversity this much emphasis, so this may seem too narrow at first. But look at the reasons in the final paragraph: costs and computer knowledge restrict access, and selection around a topic produces a less varied group. Diversity is the main reason these conferences fall short. D combines that reason with the conceded benefits, sharpening our initial prediction.
- E
This goes beyond the conferences described to a hypothetical in which broader access attracts more diverse participants. The writer doesn't assess whether conferences would remain inadequate under those changed conditions. A conclusion about their present limitations doesn't by itself settle that further question.
