Reading the passage
Why bring up honeybees here? My first thought is that tracking outward displacement isn't an invented ability: other animals use it. That gives the proposal some grounding before we examine whether pigeons use it too.
Working the answers
- A
Some species having an ability doesn't make it universal. We'd need far more than honeybees and pigeons to establish that all species can home.
- BCorrect
A mechanism used by other animals is worth considering as a possible explanation for pigeons. This states the purpose of our observation more precisely: the example gives us a reason to investigate the proposal, not proof that it's right.
- C
The writer does later question this theory, but the honeybee reference comes before that criticism. At this point, the example makes the proposal plausible enough to consider. Its local role differs from the writer's eventual judgment.
- D
No experimental technique is criticized in this reference. We're being told about an ability in other species.
- E
Honeybees using a system doesn't establish that pigeons use it. “Correct” goes further than the example supports—and conflicts with the doubts developed in paragraph 2.
