Reading the passage
The sociologists focus on shared practices and predict the loss of tribal culture. The writer responds with renewed tribal traditions and powwows that still include traditional dances and native-language prayers. An answer along those lines would fit, though this broad agreement question could also test a smaller supported point.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
The opening reports that some sociologists see the powwow as evidence of decline. Paragraph 4 gives the other side: dances announced as “traditional” and a prayer “spoken in a native language.” Those features show the continuing presence of distinct tribal cultures within the ceremony.
- B
That's the sociologists' prediction, which the writer challenges. Increasing intertribal activity doesn't establish that tribal culture will disappear.
- C
Why “rather than”? The final paragraph gives both identities a role. It doesn't say that people usually identify with the broader group instead of their particular tribe.
- D
Being mistaken doesn't establish being biased against the cultures you're studying. The writer challenges the sociologists' reasoning, not their motives.
- E
Intertribalism isn't described as damage that tribal customs must counterbalance. The final sentence says intertribal activities “reinforce” Native American identity; they have a positive role of their own.
