Reading the passage
Critical. The writer thinks the theory misses the continuing strength of tribal traditions and relies on an unsupported assumption. That's our starting prediction. Now we need to check the reason attached to each attitude word; sounding negative isn't enough.
Working the answers
- A
Political activity appears as one proposed cause of intertribalism. The writer doesn't criticize the theory for attributing political motives to cultural practices.
- B
The objection isn't that the theory unfairly condemns cultural borrowing. It's that the theory fails to account for the evidence of continuing tribal identity.
- C
The writer criticizes the theory. It predicts the dissolution of tribes; it isn't a plan for preserving them.
- D
Predicting assimilation isn't the same as calling it desirable. Neither that claim nor the writer's alleged offense is supported.
- ECorrect
The second paragraph says the social changes exceed what the theory can explain (paragraph 2). “Skeptical” may be softer than our initial prediction, but it fits: the theory doesn't fully explain why tribal traditions are strengthening alongside intertribal activity.
