Reading the passage
They both admire her writing. We already heard A praise her daring and B praise the qualities that her fiction shares with her photographs. Look for that common positive attitude.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
A calls Welty stylistically daring and refers to her “many gifts.” B praises the “acuity and patience” of her fiction and describes her as an observer who is “unsparing but benign.” Both express admiration for the literary work itself.
- B
Analysis can include praise. Those favorable descriptions are value judgments, so “without any value judgment” does not fit.
- C
B is not neutral. It uses the admired qualities of her fiction to help explain her photography.
- D
B does not criticize her literary work. “Unsparing” describes her close observation; paired with “benign,” it is part of the praise.
- E
Ambivalence means mixed feelings. A contrasts a sheltered life with adventurous writing, but that contrast is not mixed praise and criticism of the writing. The assessment of her literary work is favorable.
