Reading the passage
The ending finally tells us what to do: reform military trials. That recommendation should be part of our prediction for the final paragraph's job. As we check the answers, we should also watch for anything else the paragraph does to support that recommendation.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
This adds a move our initial prediction did not fully capture: answering an objection. The author says the military-efficiency concern is “well countered” by the rarity of hung juries, then concludes that military systems “should be reformed.” Both parts fit: the paragraph states the conclusion and responds to a reason someone might resist it.
- B
The paragraph does connect evidence to the recommendation. But this description misses the more specific work A captures: stating the conclusion and defending it against an efficiency objection.
- C
The objection concerns the consequences of changing military procedures, not whether the earlier courts reached their decisions. This also leaves out the paragraph's reform recommendation.
- D
The author does not revise the opening description of military trials. Those existing rules are the reason for recommending change.
- E
The ending builds on the earlier reasoning. It does not expose flaws in it.
