Passage A(12 more words not shown)

Passage B(493 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(32 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

A says paranormal skeptics tend to be near the reductionist end of the spectrum. Then B gives us a writer who rejects paranormal powers and treats controlled scientific tests as decisive. B fits the type A has just described.

What we’re looking for

Notice the distinction: B can disagree with Dyson about whether paranormal powers exist while still illustrating Dyson's observation about the kinds of people who tend to reject them.

Working the answers

  • A

B does not try to show that paranormal skeptics are generally far from reductionism. Its own approach points in the direction A describes.

  • B

B does not dismiss this particular assertion as beneath response. Attacking Dyson's paranormal hypothesis is not the same as dismissing every statement he makes.

  • C
    Correct

B supplies an example of the skeptical, science-centered position A associates with reductionism. Its insistence that experiments settle the matter illustrates the connection rather than disproving it.

  • D

B discusses complementarity, but to reject its application to paranormal phenomena. It does not analyze a relationship between that principle and the assertion about where skeptics fall on the spectrum.

  • E

B does not argue that the assertion conflicts with another statement in A. It disputes the paranormal conclusion while behaving much as this particular assertion predicts.
