Reading the passage

The author gives two separate lines of evidence against the strict constructionists' central claim. This is more than a small reservation about how they worded their theory. Their attempt to make natural selection explain everything is the target of the whole argument. Predict strong disagreement with that position, while keeping it separate from a rejection of evolutionary theory generally.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

Emphatic disagreement fits the sustained challenge: neutral genetic changes and mass extinction are presented as evidence against their exclusive explanation.

  • B

“Mild” understates the criticism. The author isn't merely suggesting a minor improvement; the counterexamples are supposed to undermine the position's central claim.

  • C

The author is not neutrally weighing two equally open possibilities. The argument takes a side and presents reasons against strict constructionism.

  • D

There's no condition under which the author agrees with their claim that natural selection explains everything. Accepting that selection is important doesn't amount to conditional agreement with that much stronger position.

  • E

This is the opposite of the author's attitude. The strict constructionists' account is being challenged, not endorsed.
