Reading the passage

What has this introduction actually done? It explains why Tucker is a useful subject, lists the sources used to study him, and describes how the author checked and selected his recollections. It tells us why this person and how this research—not the study's detailed findings about his career.

Working the answers

  • A

No political or intellectual tradition is singled out for correction. Concern about an understudied subject doesn't establish the broader criticism this answer describes.

  • B

The author explains methods used in a particular project. There is no proposed alternative to an established method of historical investigation. A description of one's research isn't automatically a proposal for everyone else to change theirs.

  • C

The introduction does give reasons the study may be valuable. But it doesn't summarize the study's main findings. We hear where the information came from and how it was checked, not what the later chapters discover. That difference between methods and findings is decisive.

  • D

We aren't given an earlier historical interpretation, its weaknesses, and a promised correction. Limited scholarship about Tucker isn't itself a viewpoint that the author sets out to refute.

  • E
    Correct

The first paragraph supplies the choice of subject: Tucker's career and materials can illuminate a gap in the historical record. The rest explains the sources and verification process. Both parts of this purpose match the organization we followed.
