Reading the passage
Put two details together. The opening says Tucker acted in twenty films. The second paragraph says the researcher examined the ten still available films to analyze his acting technique.
What we’re looking for
Ten out of twenty is exactly half. A preponderance means more than half—a majority—which here would require at least eleven films. So the analysis could closely examine every available film and still fail to examine a majority of all the films in which he appeared.
Working the answers
- A
Films were examined, but we don't learn that they were well known or that this analysis differs sharply from previous assessments. The fact that the project addresses a gap in scholarship doesn't establish either comparison.
- B
Interviewing Tucker isn't the same as participating in his theatrical ventures. The author describes contact as a researcher, not collaboration as a fellow performer or producer.
- C
Nothing gives the author's expectations about recognition within film and theater scholarship. This concerns standing in a field, not simply whether the book will become popular, and neither kind of expectation is supplied.
- DCorrect
The technique analysis uses the ten available films, out of twenty total. Because half is not a preponderance, it is not based on examining a majority of Tucker's films. The limitation concerns the number examined; it doesn't imply that those ten were examined carelessly.
- E
We aren't given the structures of other scholarly biographies to compare with this one. Describing the research methods does not establish how the finished book's rhetorical organization differs from most earlier works.
