Reading the passage
To support the broader claim, we need evidence that Nisa's experiences tell us something about women beyond the !Kung. If women in a quite different culture face many of the same issues, that would help show that her story isn't relevant only to this one group.
What we’re looking for
Sympathy is weaker than shared experience. I can care about someone's loss without having lived through the same kind of situation. So praise for the book or concern for Nisa won't establish the connection we need.
Working the answers
- A
These women sympathize with Nisa, but that doesn't show that they face similar experiences or dilemmas. The survey's careful design doesn't change what it actually measures.
- B
A fruitful technique for studying both men and women doesn't establish that the issues in Nisa's life also occur in other women's lives. This answer evaluates a method rather than supplying the needed connection.
- C
Critics' approval of Shostak's technique tells us nothing about whether Nisa's experiences are shared across cultures. We need supporting findings, not favorable reviews.
- DCorrect
These are women from a quite different culture who nevertheless face many of the same issues. That makes Nisa's story more informative about women's experience beyond her immediate community, without requiring every woman's life to be identical.
- E
This would show that Nisa's experience is common among other !Kung women. That helps establish representativeness within her culture, but D does more to support the question's broader, cross-cultural claim.
