Reading the passage
Imagine the proposed machine. A customer chooses a title from the digital catalog, and the machine produces a bound copy. We no longer need a warehouse full of that title waiting for buyers. But the machine still needs materials from which to make the book.
What we’re looking for
That gives us a concrete prediction: storage needs shift from finished books to the supplies used to produce them. Don't turn a change in production into an unsupported prediction about what readers will buy.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
Paper and binding material take the place of inventories of individual books as the main things requiring storage. Digital files can hold the text; they cannot supply the physical materials for the printed copy.
- B
We aren't told how readers will respond to used-book stores. Easier access to newly printed books doesn't establish that those stores will gain customers.
- C
The author describes how copies will be produced, not who will own the machines or sell each copy. Publishers might use other businesses to perform those functions. We can't infer the disappearance of distributors and retailers from the production method alone.
- D
Books still need to be edited and designed before their files are printed. Changing when copies are made doesn't remove those jobs.
- E
These are still paper books. Printing after an order may avoid unsold inventory, but the scenario doesn't establish a significant overall decrease in paper demand. We would need more information about the number of copies produced.
