Determining the most effective way to deter deliberate(447 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(9 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

We've already predicted the point: utility maximization shows why the two deterrence approaches can work together. We want the economic framework and the conclusion it supports, not just a definition of the framework.

Working the answers

  • A

This accurately describes the economic analysis, which makes it tempting. But it stops before the central conclusion: that analysis reconciles the two approaches and supports combining their recommendations.

  • B

Both influences matter, so this isn't denying social influence. But B leaves out how utility maximization resolves the deterrence debate and supports the combined approach. It reports a claim about crime's causes rather than the full conclusion about preventing it.

  • C

Quantifying effects is part of the framework. The point is what the analysis shows about the strategies' compatibility, not simply that their effects can be assigned numbers.

  • D
    Correct

This gives the framework and its consequence. Both sides offer useful policies because each can make lawful activity more attractive relative to crime. That's why the author recommends elements of both strategies.

  • E

This denies the social influences that the combined approach includes. Explaining a decision as a choice doesn't mean circumstances cannot influence that choice.
