Reading the passage
My rough outline is theory, supporting information, more detail about how the theory works, and a possible medical application. We don't need to have every step perfectly named before looking at the choices; the right answer may describe the role of that information more precisely.
Working the answers
- A
No later evidence turns against the chemical theory, and the writer doesn't argue for rejecting it.
- B
This gets the order and ending wrong. The alternative to the purely electrical account comes at the beginning, before the new supporting evidence. The ending discusses potential treatments, not an experiment to choose between competing theories.
- CCorrect
The theory is chemical transmission. The obstacle is uncertainty about how surface binding could change ion flow. The receptor's structure supplies the explanation, and selective treatment is the further implication. That tracks both the sequence and what each part contributes.
- D
The obstacle is overcome, not declared insurmountable. The new evidence supports the theory.
- E
The new information doesn't challenge the theory or force the writer to modify it. It explains the mechanism scientists had struggled to understand. Filling in that mechanism is different from revising the theory to accommodate contrary evidence.
