The painter Roy Lichtenstein helped to define pop(429 more words not shown)

Which one of the following,(10 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

My first thought is the central characterization: Lichtenstein does more than make a parody. But that alone won't separate these choices, which concern his reactions to other artists. We need to check what the writer says he values, rather than assume that praising an expressionist or criticizing a pop artist must contradict the account.

Working the answers

  • A

Attending an exhibition doesn't establish agreement with the work on display. This tells us little about his artistic values.

  • B

Praising an unusually emotional later expressionist painting fits the objection to that movement's fading emotional power. He could value a painting that restores what the writer says has weakened.

  • C

The early expressionists' emotional power isn't the target of the rebellion. Praising it is compatible with the distinction the writer makes.

  • D
    Correct

This would have him criticize a painting for being emotional. But the account presents him as reacting against a loss of emotional power and seeking reconciliation between parody and true feeling. The problem isn't that he criticizes a fellow pop artist; the writer already allows that. It's what he criticizes: emotion itself.

  • E

Criticizing a lack of emotion fits that same concern with lost emotional power. It wouldn't challenge the account the way criticism for having emotion would.
