Reading the passage
This EXCEPT question changes the rule: support from either account is enough to eliminate a choice. We aren't looking for a point they both make. I'll check which four claims we can support, leaving the one that adds something unjustified.
Working the answers
- A
A lists bentonite and other clays as ingredients, and B includes bentonite clay in water-based mud. Clay's role is supported.
- B
B says water-based mud is not especially poisonous to sea life (Passage B, paragraph 2). That supports the modest claim that at least one type isn't significantly toxic; neither wording means completely harmless.
- C
A explicitly identifies a problem in studying drilling-waste effects. B also reports environmental differences and effects on organisms. Some study is supported; we don't need a named experiment or a detailed research history.
- D
B describes oil-based mud as normally used with about 30 percent mineral oil within this regulated activity. That supports permission to use such a mixture. Don't confuse it with permission to dump that entire mixture overboard, which B separately restricts.
- ECorrect
Released during the drilling phase doesn't mean released continuously throughout that phase. B describes recycling water-based mud and then discharging a batch over several hours. Continuous discharge isn't established.
