Which one of the following(9 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

We've already predicted Walker's success in reaching different audiences. We also noticed that the dance's layered history matters: much of the discussion explains how African traditions, European influences, and successive parodies created that potential appeal.

What we’re looking for

Look for an answer connecting her achievement with that history, rather than merely repeating that she was famous.

Working the answers

  • A

Her fame is the starting fact, not the explanation developed afterward. This leaves out how the dance's cultural mixture and her interpretation helped produce that success.

  • B

Authenticity explains her appeal to one audience: middle- and upper-class European Americans. Other groups valued grace or displays of status. Also, the complex influences helped the dance attract audiences; B presents her success as occurring in spite of them.

  • C
    Correct

This brings the two halves together. The dance developed through cultural preservation, satire, and later parodies; Walker used that complex mixture to make it broadly popular. That's the fuller version of our prediction.

  • D

We aren't given this contrast between Walker's version and other versions. Satire and cultural preservation were already part of the dance's history, not qualities established as unique to her treatment.

  • E

The text says “one of the first,” not the first. More fundamentally, Walker's success came from working with the dance's complex development, not simply preserving it as originally performed.
