Reading the passage
My first thought is scientists versus business interests. But that is a rough description of the conflict.
What we’re looking for
What are the two competing ways of treating the research? Is it available for people to share, or can someone control and sell it?
Working the answers
- A
Neither account contrasts research that sells successfully with research that fails commercially. The conflict concerns control and access, not whether a particular product makes money.
- B
A mentions research methods and results together as things people share less freely. It doesn't oppose one to the other, and B doesn't make that contrast either.
- CCorrect
Both contrast a “public good” with a commodity. The public-good view makes research available to society; the commodity view allows control over access and commercial use. This states more precisely the conflict behind our scientists-versus-business prediction.
- D
B distinguishes discovery from invention, but A never makes that distinction. The question requires a contrast in both.
- E
Neither compares scientific research with other kinds of inquiry. The disagreement is over how scientific research is shared and controlled.
